Salena | Nov 12 | Dancer | Canadian ♥

I am an English literature major and future law student, currently attending McGill University. I always enjoy a good inspiration but most of all, I want to inspire others. I love all music and films. I treasure my beautiful family and friends. I would like to travel the world. I do believe everything happens for a reason, but I also believe that we are in control of our own fate.

Vulnerability is, by nature, linked to selfishness. That selfishness, which protects us from hurt and pain, shame and rejection, is, what some would call a natural quality. Evolutionarily, it is a survival strategy. However:

Vulnerability is not weakness. That myth is profoundly dangerous. Vulnerability is emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty - it fuels our daily lives. It is our most accurate measurement of courage: so be vulnerable, let ourselves be seen, be honest. It is the birthplace of creativity, innovation, and change.
Brené Brown, ”Listening to Shame,” TED Talks, March 2012

Recently, I have found it difficult to let my guard down. It is simply much easier said than done.

"I’m not going to be one of those people who sits around talking about what they’re going to do or become. I’m just going to do it. Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you’ll escape it one day, and how amazing it will be, and imagining the future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present."

"I’m really scared for my generation, you know. The thing that scares me most is Tumblr. I hate what Tumblr has become. Because it like, it reminds me of those clique-y girls in high school that used to make fun of everyone else and define what was cool, but in five years, when you all graduate, that shit doesn’t matter. No one gives a fuck about that shit. Instead of kids going out and making their own moments, they’re just taking these images and living vicariously through other people’s moments. It just kills me. Then you’ll meet them and they’re just the biggest turkey in the world. They don’t actually embody any of those things. They just emulate. It’s scary man, simulation life that we’re living. It scares me."

From you I learned that love can be short and heartbreak is long. Time heals, but forgetting is not a skill that can be mastered. So I waited. It is harder for me to trust now. It is just easier to be shallow and not get too involved in anything that is not permanent in my life. I have built a suit of armor to protect myself but inside it, I will always be missing that piece of me not even you can return. Who would be stupid enough to ever let themselves hurt from that kind of pain again? But then I would also ask myself, how then, will I ever get to feel that kind of happiness again?

thanks foer writing that piece about dankos burning herat i was trying to find that story for years. i was taught this story in school when i was 14 years old and i only remembered that it was from Russia. Thanks again Apostolos Kolettis , Greece

Apostolos, I cannot sufficiently express how thrilled and excited I was upon seeing your comment. Danko’s Burning Heart took me a long time to find since I knew not the title nor the author’s name to begin with. It is truly an undervalued tale but it also left quite an impact on me as a child and I am thankful that my search for it has helped yours.

Kind Regards - Salena Gao, Canada

We want to be loved; failing that, admired; failing that, feared; failing that, hated and despised. At all costs we want to stir up some sort of feeling in others. Our soul abhors a vacuum. At all costs it longs for contact.
